The McNAIR Center at the University of South Carolina has partnered with Materials Research Furnaces (MRF) and defense technology firm Integer Technologies to install a state-of-the-art, ultra-high-temperature furnace system.
Operating at staggering temperatures up to 2400°C (4350°F), this expansive 8-cubic-foot usable hot zone system enables high-temperature precision thermal processing, including pyrolysis, densification, and graphitization, for advanced materials. The installation will be a game-changer for the development and optimization of next-generation aerospace and defense materials, specifically Carbon-Carbon (C-C) and Silicon Carbide (SiC) composites.
By integrating intelligent, model-based software tools developed in collaboration with Columbia-based Integer Technologies, the project combines raw thermal capability with smart automation to optimize manufacturing processes. This addition significantly builds out McNAIR’s advanced manufacturing facility footprint, positioning the center at the forefront of extreme-environment materials research.
