Dr. Wout De Backer is an assistant professor at the University of South Carolina with expertise in aerospace engineering and additive manufacturing. During his postdoctoral work, he served as Program Manager for the Robotic Additive Manufacturing team at the McNAIR Center for Aerospace Innovation and Research. His academic background includes bachelor’s and master’s degrees in aerospace engineering from Delft University of Technology, with a focus on composite structural and aircraft design, as well as international study experience at the University of Kansas.

Dr. De Backer has been recognized as one of AIAA and Aviation Week’s 20 Twenties, honoring emerging leaders in aerospace research and innovation. He is an active member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, serving as Vice Chair of the Region II Carolina Section and faculty advisor for USC’s AIAA chapter, which he co-founded. His work includes peer-reviewed research, pending patents, and ongoing contributions to the aerospace engineering community.
