Welcome to the Acute Stress Center

Here at the Acute Stress Center of South Carolina, we act as a synergistic hub for activities related to cognitive functionality and neurological disorders.

Featured Research Areas

As an industry leader, our researchers in the acute stress center (ASC) and affiliated partners are working on cutting edge technology focused on characterizing, modeling and predicting physiological biomarkers associated with stress.

Physician Burnout in Emergency Departments

Our researchers are developing technology to help clinicians characterize and understand work-related stress using AI and wearable biomonitoring tools like electroencephalogram (EEG).

Cognitive Deception Using Stress Simulations

Using electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings, we investigate how stress affects brain activity to better understand and quantify deceptive behavior. Our research consists of a wide range of experimental protocols - including fun and engaging setups like playing Mario Kart to simulate real-world stress in a controlled environment.

Natural Language

Processing (NLP)

Our researchers have been utilizing machine learning and AI to create a system that detects deceptive speech patterns. The system uses natural language processing and statistical analysis to develop a model that recognizes deceptive linguistic patterns.

Deception Detection Using Thermographic Imaging

Thermal

Partnering with the Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency (DCSA), we are working to quantify physiological changes related to stress using a multispectral approach.

Our Mission Statement

At the Acute Stress Center, we’re dedicated to improving how we understand and measure stress in real time - especially in high-pressure environments like healthcare, national defense, and law enforcement. Stress can deeply affect how people think, perform, and recover, but it’s not always easy to detect. That’s why our team combines cutting-edge tools like EEG monitoring, multispectral imaging, GC-MS, HPLC, and AI-driven systems to develop non-invasive, reliable ways to track stress and assess credibility. Our research helps protect the well-being of professionals on the front lines and supports smarter, faster decision-making in situations where every moment counts.
