Professor and Chair, Biomedical Engineering
Affiliate faculty in Chemical Engineering
Ph.D., Chemical Engineering, Purdue University

Dr. Mark Uline is a Professor of Biomedical and Chemical Engineering at the University of South Carolina and currently serves as Chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering. With his background in thermodynamics, Dr. Uline is helping the ASC with the thermal imaging project, providing the fundamental knowledge of the thermodynamics of blood flow and thermal imaging.

His research group focuses on the fundamental understanding of complex interactions at interfaces, using molecular modeling to investigate phase transitions and binding events in lipid bilayers, as well as surfactant-driven ordering in liquid-crystal thin films. Additional areas of interest include bubble and droplet nucleation theory, charge regulation in polyelectrolytes, and simulations of molecular systems under controlled thermodynamic conditions. Dr. Uline holds a Ph.D. and B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University and completed his postdoctoral training in Biomedical Engineering at Northwestern University. He has held multiple leadership roles within USC’s biomedical engineering program, including serving as Program Director and Undergraduate Director.
