The SmartState™ Program

The core of the SmartState™ Program is Centers of Economic Excellence established by South Carolina’s senior research universities.

The primary mission of the SmartState™ Program is to expand the economy and encourage growth through research and development, partnerships, and advanced training. The SmartState™ Program is making significant progress in building the knowledge economy that will create high-wage, high-skilled jobs in all industries of South Carolina.

Industry-focused Smart Clusters

These Centers are relevant to ongoing university research programs. They are grouped into six industry-focused Smart Clusters to make it easier for businesses, students, potential faculty, and the public to engage with the SmartState™ Program.

  • Advanced Materials & Nanotechnology
      —Multifunctional Materials and Structures (MFMS)
  • Automotive & Transportation
  • Biomedical
  • Energy Alternative Fuels
  • Information Science
  • Pharmaceutical

Multi-Functional Materials & Structures (MFMS)

The SmartState™ Center MFMS has made notable progress. The center has developed a 3D Printer for Continuous Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers, technology for Induction Welding of Thermoplastic Composites, and the design and simulation software for fiber steering and induction welding.

The MFMS focus areas include:

  • Specializing in manufacturing processes, machines and design software
      for thermoplastic composites
  • Building on deep knowledge of aerospace engineering
  • Thriving on strong relations with the industry
