Overview

This workshop provides hands-on experience on advanced topics in networking, giving participants a guided lab environment to configure and troubleshoot real protocol behavior. It will focus on the IPv6 fundamentals and Border Gateway Protocol (BGP). The IPv6 portion covers 128-bit addressing, autoconfiguration, and IPV6 Systems. BGP is the de facto standard routing protocol in today's Internet. BGP allows operators to configure routing policies to steer traffic and implement security safeguards. Participants will configure the basics of BGP, understand the influence of BGP attributes, steer traffic by configuring these attributes, and understand the security flaws that BGP inherited from its early design and implementation. 

 

Outcomes

By the end of this tutorial, attendees will:

IPv6:
  • Understand IPv6 addresses
  • Deploy and operate IPv6 networks by statically configuring IPv6 addresses on routers, DNS servers, Web servers, and other end devices
Border Gateway Protocol (BGP):
  • Describe the operation of EBGP and IBGP sessions with different attributes
  • Understand Local Preference and MED attributes
Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS):
  • Understand the use case for Virtual Routing and Forwarding (VRF)
  • Implement MPLS Layer 3 VPN using Multi-Protocol BGP

 

Intended Audience

The tutorial is targeted to IT educators and professionals such as system administrators, network engineers, and practitioners. The content is suitable for instructors who want to incorporate advanced material into their networking classes. The content is available for NETLAB systems.
 

Pre-requisites

Attendees are expected to know basic networking (IPv4, local area networks, OSI model). Training activities will be conducted using a virtual platform. Attendees will be provided with a username and a password.
